clean environment, safe life - our identity, our rights

The riverside cleanliness drive, held on 12TH April 2025, was a significant step toward promoting environmental conservation and community engagement. The event took place along the river Balashan Picnic spot in Dudhya location under Kurseong Block, with enthusiastic Team members and Volunteers from SarvodayaSamadhikar Foundation of Siliguri.
The initiative began with an opening speech by Mr. Deependra Rai – Managing Director of SSF, Siliguri, who emphasized the importance of preserving water bodies and maintaining ecological balance. Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and cleaning equipment, volunteers spread out along the riverbank, determined to make a difference. During the drive, an impressive amount of waste, including plastic bottles, food wrappers, and other non-biodegradable materials, was collected. The team also segregated waste for proper disposal and recycling, showcasing their commitment to responsible waste management practices.
Apart from cleaning the riverbank, awareness activities were conducted to educate participants and onlookers about the impact of pollution on aquatic life and the need for sustainable practices.

Objectives:

  • To clean public spaces and reduce littering.
  • To raise awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal and river conservation.
  • To inspire long-term behavioural changes in the community towards environmental conservation.

Activities Conducted

  • Waste Collection: SSF staff and executive members divided into teams and collected trash along the riverbank, including plastic bottles, food wrappers, and discarded items.
  • Segregation of Waste: Collected waste was separated into recyclables, biodegradables, and non-recyclables for proper disposal.

Challenges Faced

  • Some areas were heavily littered, requiring extra effort to clean.
  • Limited availability of trash bags and gloves initially, but additional supplies were later provided.
  • A few community members were unaware of the event, highlighting the need for better outreach next time.

Conclusion

The Riverside Cleanliness Drive was a successful step toward environmental conservation and community involvement. The event not only improved the physical condition of the area but also strengthened the participants’ commitment to protecting natural resources. Moving forward, regular clean-up drives and stronger advocacy campaigns will be organized to ensure long-term sustainability.
